North Coast

On the island’s northern coast, resorts cater almost exclusively to rowdy young visitors that love thumbing bars and endless drinks.

Many Greeks might agree that Chania is one of the most beautiful destinations in all of Greece.   Its Venetian Harbor, known as the old port, is a huge draw for visitors featuring narrow shopping streets and waterfront restaurants.

This attractive seaside town is still a hidden jewel, undiscovered by the masses.  Explore its fantastic monasteries and enjoy its pristine beaches.

The largest city of Crete is one of Greece’s major urban centers. Its development dates back to the 9th century AD.

Agios Nikolaos

Located east of Iraklion, Agios Nikolaos is set in the largest natural bay in Crete called Mirabello Bay, named for the mira bella or beautiful view of the sea from the town.

The third-largest city in Crete is often referred to as scaled-down version of beautiful Chania.  It features a picturesque harbor and strong Venetian and Turkish influences in its architecture.

Near Agios Nikolaos is Elounda Gulf, a resort known for its prestigious luxury hotels. Its old charm can be found in its harbor that is lined with cafes and tavernas.

Spinalonga Island

Spinalonga Island is a small island situated off the coast of Elounda and Plaka in the Mirabello Bay. During 1200 AD the Venetians built huge fortifications on this island. In more modern times, from 1903 until the 1950s, lepers from all over Greece were shipped to the island. The suffering of the lepers who inhabited Spinalonga was part of the plot in Victoria Hislop’s bestselling book, The Island.
